NASCAR’s message loud and clear

first_img“I think the message is really clear in the garage right now that they aren’t going to put up with anything.” NASCAR suspended Kenseth’s crew chief and three of Evernham’s crew chiefs Tuesday for violations discovered during qualifying inspections two days earlier. Punishment only got worse Wednesday, when Michael Waltrip’s crew chief and team director were thrown out of the Daytona 500 and suspended indefinitely after an illegal substance was found during inspection. Waltrip was docked 100 points, and his crew chief, David Hyder, also was fined $100,000. Kenseth said his main concern was his team’s punishment was much more severe than the one levied against Jimmie Johnson’s team before last year’s season opener. “That was 10 times graver an infraction than this was,” said Kenseth, the 2003 Cup series champion and last year’s runner-up. “There were parts purposely built to move body panels around, all kinds of stuff, and we had a couple covers, or one cover, come off that was covering a hole up. It’s night- and-day difference. It’s kind of like the difference between jaywalking and attempted murder.” DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Driver Matt Kenseth and car owner Jack Roush expressed outrage Wednesday over NASCAR’s decision to dock the team 50 championship points before the season-opening Daytona 500. Fellow car owner Ray Evernham equally was frustrated by the sport’s tough stance on rule-breakers. Even drivers not involved in NASCAR’s cheating crackdown were concerned about whether the governing body was going too far by suspending four crew chiefs Tuesday for failed inspections. “They are creating a deterrence right now,” driver Jeff Burton said. “That’s what they are doing. I’d be willing to bet that if everybody had to do the same thing over again, they wouldn’t do the same thing. We have to be careful not to create a penalty so large that it’s not fair. center_img Robbie Reiser, crew chief for Kenseth, and Kenny Francis, crew chief for Kasey Kahne, were suspended four races and fined $50,000 each. The drivers were docked 50 points each. Rodney Childers, crew chief for Scott Riggs, and Josh Brown, crew chief for Elliott Sadler, were suspended two races and fined $25,000. The drivers were docked 25 points each. “Certainly, it’s been unprecedented,” Roush said. “But if you look and say what have been the precedents of NASCAR, what has been their history and their tradition, it has been to do unprecedented things – when it suits their purpose. They continue to do things that are different and that are more severe as they relate to infractions than has historically been the case.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Mourinho cools talk of Ronaldo return

first_img0Shares0000Ronaldo and Real Madrid are in the midst of a crisis, with boss Zinedine Zidane under severe pressure after crashing out of the Copa del Rey this week and trailing La Liga leaders Barcelona by 19 points. Photo/COURTESYLONDON, United Kingdom, Jan 26 – Jose Mourinho has played down the prospect of Cristiano Ronaldo returning to Manchester United.Ronaldo and Real Madrid are in the midst of a crisis, with boss Zinedine Zidane under severe pressure after crashing out of the Copa del Rey this week and trailing La Liga leaders Barcelona by 19 points. But United are unlikely to take advantage of the situation at Madrid after boss Mourinho poured cold water on the possibility of Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford.United have already boosted their attacking ranks this month with the capture of Alexis Sanchez and would need to offer the 32-year-old a huge contract to complete a deal.“I should be the last one to add some fuel to the fire,” said Mourinho.“Madrid is on fire, the results are not good and it is a club where I worked three years. I care about the club and I don’t want to add fire.“To put some water on the fire I would say Cristiano is the kind of player every manager wants, every club wants.“But only one manager can have and only one club can have – Zidane and Real Madrid, that’s my feeling.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Allegri expects Dybala to deliver against Real

first_img0Shares0000Paulo Dybala scored the goal at Wembley that sent Juventus through at the expense of Tottenham © AFP / MARCO BERTORELLOTURIN, Italy, Apr 3 – Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri is expecting Argentine ace Paulo Dybala to fire against Real Madrid in Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg.“Dybala will play a great game, he has grown a lot both on the physical and psychological level and is coming into his own scoring a nice goal against AC Milan,” said Allegri. The 24-year-old Argentine scored 10 goals in the opening six Serie A games, but only four in the league between the end of September and early March, with a dip in form followed by a hamstring injury. But he ended his long wait for a European goal with the winner in the 2-1 second-leg victory over Tottenham at Wembley, with his tally of 22 goals in all competitions including a stunning opener in Saturday’s 3-1 win over AC Milan.Allegri believes learning from their devastating 4-1 final defeat to Real Madrid in Cardiff last year will be the key to victory over two legs in the next week.“From a psychological point of view we really need to stay in the match. In Cardiff after 2-1 we weren’t in the match, we gave up a bit,” said Allegri, who believes Juventus have “improved and can scare” Real. And he said he did not envy Real’s extensive European trophy cabinet with 12 titles to Juventus’s two, won in 1985 and 1996.“Jealousy and envy are not part of my character. Real Madrid are an extraordinary team but Juventus will be up to expectations and will fight tomorrow night.”Allegri faces two major absentees with Miralem Pjanic and Medhi Benatia both suspended for the first leg.“Either (Claudio) Marchisio or (Rodrigo) Bentancur, one of the two will play tomorrow,” he said.“Then I will have to decide between (Daniele) Rugani and (Andrea) Barzagli, and who will play up front.“Both (Mario) Mandzukic and Alex Sandro are in very good shape, I’ll see tomorrow whether or not they play, as well as (Juan) Cuadrado who has come back.“We have basically the whole squad available apart from the two suspended players.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

DONEGAL SCHOOLS LEARN HOW TO SAVE WATER WITH UNIQUE PROGRAMME

first_imgTWELVE local primary schools working on An Taisce’s Green-Schools programme participated in Water Forums held in Letterkenny last week. The pupils and teachers from the Donegal schools took part in a variety of fun games and activities to increase their knowledge on water conservation. The main objective of the forum was to provide advice and ideas to each school in order to increase their water use efficiency and provide support as they work on the Green-Schools Water theme. An Taisce Green-Schools has teamed up with Irish Water to support schools undertaking the Water theme of the Green-Schools programme throughout Ireland. The Green-Schools Water theme encourages participating schools to improve their water efficiency and to conserve water by adopting simple measures through a seven-step framework. Operated by An Taisce, Green-Schools promotes and acknowledges long-term whole school action for the environment across seven themes including water, energy, waste and sustainable transport.Green Schools Officer Ruth Gaj-McKeever commented “It was a real pleasure to see the dedication and enthusiasm of all the Donegal schools that attended the forum. It show’s great promise that the future generation will be extremely water wise”.In addition, Irish Water and An Taisce have launched a competition to find the Irish Water Green-School of the Year and a poster competition open to all schools currently working towards their Green Flag for Water.
