Dear Editor,“But I tell you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which spitefully use you and persecute you.” Matthew 5:44I pray for Mr Hamilton Green and his family that his remaining years on earth will be peaceful and that he would find the path that will lead to everlasting life.It is with great pain that I write this letter to respond to gross inaccuracies and misrepresentations by Mr Hamilton Green in a section of the media. Out of respect for his age and my lifelong upbringing of respect for elders, I will not undress him publicly, but will merely state facts.Fact 1 – I was consecrated as Guyana’s first Pentecostal Bishop on February 8, 1995, at a public ceremony held at the Square of the Revolution, which saw an assembly of more than 20,000 Guyanese, of which Mr Green himself was present. It was not done overseas as Mr Greene claims and I did not return to Guyana and announce my consecration.Fact 2 – I did not attend the US Ambassador’s home, Mr Brent Hardt, when then Minister of Education, acting as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Priya Manickchand, delivered her speech, which he described as vulgar and outrageous. I believe that Mr Greene is battling with memory loss.Fact 3 – At an International Inter-religious Federation for World Peace (IIFWP) meeting, held at the Georgetown Club, where Mr Green was a keynote speaker, he used the occasion, in the presence of dozens of religious leaders, to politically attack the then President of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, about his unregistered marriage. He sought to engage me and I declined, relating to him that should I speak, I would not speak selectively. He was obviously annoyed and continues to repeat and misrepresent what transpired. As I mentioned earlier, I believe the elderly gentleman is suffering from memory loss.Fact 4 – The church building in D’Urban Street, known as Winner’s Cathedral, where I am the presiding prelate, was built during the years of 2001 to 2005, funded and supported by the members and friends of the congregation. Mr Green was an invited guest and in his capacity as then Mayor of Georgetown, he delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. As a resident of Lodge, Mr Green is aware of the hard work and sacrifices of the congregants in ensuring that this structure was erected.Thank you, Mr Green, for admiring, even though awkwardly now, my leadership. Just as a reminder, leadership is not only about doing extraordinary things but it mostly encouraging ordinary people to do extraordinary things. That was done in Lodge, Georgetown.I reject any insinuation that the financing of this building was done “…compliments of a friend, who will be returning to Guyana under escort shortly”.Fact 5 – For the benefit of Mr Green et al, I still preach and will continue to do so.In closing, as a Bishop, I am duty-bound to be a priest, where I speak to God on behalf of the people in prayer; a Prophet, where I speak to the people the word of God and a King, where I rule with righteous judgement and in doing so, I deal with principles and not personalities. Jesus washed feet, not faces. So, this is Juan Edghill and he will continue to let his light shine.Yours faithfully,Juan A Edghill
Fifteen-year-old Ethan Lee continues to cement his name in the world of chess after recording yet another win over the weekend, this time at the Wendell Meusa Chess Foundation (WMCF) Kids Tournament.Lee has been having an extraordinary 2018, being crowned as the Saint Stanislaus and Marian Academy chess champion respectively. The tournament over the weekend was no different with Lee convincingly winning seven out of seven games, similarly to another competition just under two weeks ago.Given that the likes of Jaden Taylor, Ghansham Allijohn and National Junior Champ Joshua Gopaul were missing from the event, Lee’s only challenge came in the form of Rajiv Lee of Queen’s College. In their encounter, both players opted to execute the tactical Sicilian defence. The winners’ row at the Wendell Meusa Chess Foundation Kids TournamentHowever, being Lee’s pet line of defence, the Marian Academy champion managed to outplay the Queen’s College student by using his superior knowledge and experience to capitalise on a few errors made by Rajiv.Meanwhile, Rajiv had some recognition of his own after he played superbly in what was his first mainstream tournament. Aside from his loss to Ethan Lee, Rajiv played to a thrilling draw against young prospect Chelsea Juma. The young man showcased tons of potential and was not expected to perform that well. He made use of aggressive and tactical combinations and as such, he took home the second-place trophy gaining 5.5 points from seven games.Another promising Marian Academy student took the third position. Odit Rodrigues finished on 4.5 points ahead of 12-year-old female Chelsea Juma of St Stanislaus College. After allowing illness to deter her on the first day of the event, Juma rebounded on day two to showcase her prowess. For her strong finish and eventual best female title, the 12-year-old earned herself one-month free training at the chess foundation. Eleven-year-old Ronan Lee took the youngest player prize when he finished on three points followed by Jonathan Stepney of Marian Academy and Jarrell Troyer of St Stanislaus College.Juma, along with 14-year-old Sasha Shariff of Marian Academy, is training and gearing up for the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Women’s Championship, which is scheduled to be hosted in Barbados from July 27 to August 3. This will be Guyana’s first time having female representatives at such a tournament and these young ladies are expected to grace the list of national players who are ranked by the World Chess Federation (FIDE). These young ladies will be seeking financial assistance to cover their airfare cost and any person who is interested in provided financial assistance can call Mr Meusa (664-0124) or Mrs Jardin (692-2708).

School officials plan to replace the kindergarten playground next. EAST WHITTIER – First- through third-graders at Macy Elementary School had their first chance Friday to climb on the school’s brand new $38,362 playground equipment. The largely parent-driven effort resulted in a ten-unit swing set, a platform walking bridge, a climbing rock wall, a rock ladder and monkey bars over a sand surface. All the money was raised through committees by the Macy community, according to Principal Tara Ryan. The project was a collaboration between the Macy Parent Teachers Association and the Lowell Joint School Districts Maintenance Department. “(The project) came as a request from the parents, the kids didn’t complain,” Ryan said. The old equipment was fine, but they probably didn’t know what they were missing. Now (the new equipment) is state of the art. It brings us into the 21st Century.”
0Shares0000Victor Wanyama will captain Kenya in the country’s first Africa Cup of Nations appearance since 2004NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 2 – Victor Wanyama’s transfer to Belgian top tier side Club Brugge might not happen after all despite the club and his current employers Tottenham Hotspur having agreed a Sh1.6bn fee for the transfer of the midfielder.Wanyama had travelled to Bruges on Friday for talks over the deal, but it is understood there was not agreement between the two parties over the player’s wages, thus the deal remaining unfinished with the European transfer window closing on Monday night. The Bundesliga transfer window is first to close at 7pm EAT with the Serie A deadline at 11pm. In Ligue 1 and La Liga, the transfer window closes at 1am.It is now likely that Wanyama will remain at White Hart Lane, at least up to January, when he will try to get a move once again after falling out of favor with Mauricio Pochettino.Latest reports intimate that Wanyama’s former team Celtic FC have been considering a move for the Kenyan, though they will only take him on loan as they cannot afford his wages. If he goes on loan, then Celtic will share his Sh8.1mn per week pay with Spurs. However, sources intimate that Wanyama will most likely remain with Spurs till January. Italian and French clubs were also interested in his services. The midfielder had been a core figure in Pochettino’s squad when he followed his manager from Southampton in 2016, but last season proved tough as he went in and out of injuryThe signing of Frenchman Tanguy Ndombele who plays in a similar role with Wanyama and Giovani Lo Celso further put Wanyama’s time at the Lane close to the end with Pochettino also preferring Eric Dier and Harry Winks in midfield as well.0Shares0000(Visited 115 times, 1 visits today)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) – Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, al-Qaida’s leader in Iraq who led a bloody campaign of suicide bombings and kidnappings, has been killed in an air raid north of Baghdad – a major victory in the U.S.-led war in Iraq and the broader war on terror. Iraq’s prime minister and U.S. officials said his identity was confirmed by fingerprints and a first-hand look at his face. The announcement came six days after the Jordanian-born terror leader appeared in a videotape, railing against Shiites in Iraq and saying militias are raping women and killing Sunnis and the community must fight back. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said al-Zarqawi was killed along with seven aides Wednesday evening in a house 30 miles northeast of Baghdad in the volatile province of Diyala, just east of the provincial capital of Baqouba, al-Maliki said. “Today, al-Zarqawi was eliminated,” al-Maliki told a news conference, drawing loud applause from reporters as he was flanked by U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and U.S. Gen. George Casey, the top U.S. commander in Iraq. Al-Maliki said the air strike was the result of intelligence reports provided to Iraqi security forces by residents in the area, and U.S. forces acted on the information. “Those who disrupt the course of life, like al-Zarqawi, will have a tragic end,” he said. He also warned those who follow the militant’s lead that “whenever there is a new al-Zarqawi, we will kill him.” “This is a message for all those who embrace violence, killing and destruction to stop and to (retreat) before it’s too late,” he said. “It is an open battle with all those who incite sectarianism.” Khalilzad added “the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is a huge success for Iraq and the international war on terror.” He also gave a thumbs up and said it was a good day for the United States. Casey said the hunt for al-Zarqawi began in the area two weeks ago, and al-Zarqawi’s body was identified by fingerprints and facial recognition. The Jordanian-born militant, who was believed to have personally beheaded at least two American hostages, became Iraq’s most wanted militant, as notorious as Osama bin Laden, to whom he swore allegiance in 2004. The United States put a $25 million bounty on his head, the same as bin Laden. In the past year, he moved his campaign beyond Iraq’s borders, claiming to have carried out a Nov. 9, 2005, triple suicide bombing against hotels in Amman, Jordan, that killed 60 people, as well as other attacks in Jordan and even a rocket attack from Lebanon into northern Israel. U.S. forces and their allies came close to capturing al-Zarqawi several times since his campaign began in mid-2003. His closest brush may have come in late 2004. Deputy Interior Ministry Maj. Gen. Hussein Kamal said Iraqi security forces caught al-Zarqawi near the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah but then released him because they didn’t realize who he was. In May 2005, Web statements by his group said al-Zarqawi had been wounded in fighting with Americans and was being treated in a hospital abroad – raising speculation over a successor among his lieutenants. But days later, a statement said al-Zarqawi was fine and had returned to Iraq. There was never any independent confirmation of the reports of his wounding. U.S. forces believe they just missed capturing al-Zarqawi in a Feb. 20, 2005 raid in which troops closed in on his vehicle west of Baghdad near the Euphrates River. His driver and another associate were captured and al-Zarqawi’s computer was seized along with pistols and ammunition. U.S. troops twice launched massive invasions of Fallujah, the stronghold used by al-Qaida in Iraq fighters and other insurgents west of Baghdad. An April 2004 offensive left the city still in insurgent hands, but the October 2004 assault wrested it from them. However, al-Zarqawi – if he was in the city – escaped.

A JUDGE has warned a motorist who drove so fast a Garda car couldn’t catch him that he faces jail if he breaches a driving ban.Jason Kee, 23, drove so fast that Gardai driving at 140kph couldn’t catch him.Kee appeared before Judge Paul Kelly (pictured) at Glenties District Court on dangerous driving charges. Supt Michael Finan told the court that on the morning of March 21 last, a garda patrol car spotted Kee driving his 91-registered Honda Civic at speed on the Glenties to Frosses Road. The officers pursued the car but despite chasing it for eight miles, they were unable to catch Kee. The speed limit on the country road is 80kph.At one stage Sgt John McGroarty, who was travelling to work at around 8.30am, saw Kee coming towards him.“Sgt McGroarty saw Kee in the vehicle. Kee was driving at a very high speed bouncing on the roadway and cross the road. Sgt McGroarty had to swerve to his left to avoid a collision,” siad Supt Finan.Kee, a mechanic, was arrested later that day at a garage in Donegal Town where he works as a mechanic.A defence solicitor said if Kee was late for work and said he didn’t see the patrol car.He would probably lose his job as a mechanic if he lost his license.“Apart from this indiscretion he is a respectable young man,” said the solicitor.“Sounds a lot more than an indiscretion,” responded Judge Kelly.Judge Kelly (pictured above) called Kee up and told him: “You were driving at 140kph on a country road. We’ve had some very serious and tragic cases in this county with a serious loss of life. This type of driving is absolutely inexcusable.”He jailed Kee for three months, suspending the sentence for two years. Kee was also disqualified from driving for three years and fined €250.Judge Kelly told him that if he breaches the driving ban he will go to prison.JUDGE WARNS 140KPH DRIVER HE WILL GO TO JAIL IF HE BREACHES BAN was last modified: October 28th, 2012 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Donegal TownFROSSESGlentiesJUDGE WARNS 140KPH DRIVER HE WILL GO TO JAIL IF HE BREACHES BAN
