Amit Shah to hold meeting with Bengal BJP unit in Delhi today

first_imgBJP national president Amit Shah will hold a meeting of top party leaders from Bengal in the national capital on Wednesday amid the ongoing tussle in the unit. Party sources said on Tuesday that State BJP president Dilip Ghosh and senior leader Mukul Roy will take part in the meeting which will discuss organisational issues and the upcoming party organisational elections in the State. Mr. Ghosh said the meeting is a routine one and denied that there would be discussions on his differences with Mr. Roy. .“Every two months we have such meetings on organisational progress in the State. All the organisational issues will be discussed”. But State BJP sources said the differences between Mr. Roy and Mr. Ghosh will be discussed during the meeting. The differences between the two leaders came out in the open over induction of former Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and his friend Baisakhi Banerjee on August 14 at the BJP headquarters in Delhi. Mr. Chatterjee had recently said he would quit the party if TMC MLA Debashree Roy joins the party. He had expressed his desire to quit the saffron party barely after two weeks of joining it as he “felt humiliated” due to certain remarks by State unit leaders.Mr. Ghosh dismissed Mr. Chatterjee’s allegation saying no one can join it by setting any “precondition” and every member has to abide by the rules and regulations of the party. “At a time when people of Bengal are looking at us (BJP) as an alternative, differences between the two top leaders of the State unit has not gone down well with the central leadership and has sent out a wrong message to the cadres,” a senior State BJP leader said. Buoyed by its performance in the Lok Sabha election when it had bagged 18 out of a total 42 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal, only four less than the TMC, BJP leaders have been asserting that their next target is to unseat Mamata Banerjee from power in the 2021 State polls.last_img read more

Kartik puts a check on Assam’s progress

first_imgWhile the cricket on display on Day One of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match at the Karnail Singh Stadium in New Delhi could hardly be called ‘exciting’, there was enough action to suggest a closely-fought low-scoring match was on the cards.Murali Karthik in action at the Karnail Singh Stadium on Wednesday. At stumps, Railways were on top with captain Murali Kartik’s four wickets helping reduce Assam to 174 for seven in 92 overs.Assam skipper Amol Muzumdar’s decision to bat first upon winning the toss was no doubt influenced by the spinnerfriendly look of the track. But the decision backfired soon when, in the fifth over of the day, opener Parvez Aziz was caught behind off experienced medium pacer Jai Prakash Yadav for two.The other opener, former Maharashtra batsman Dheeraj Jadhav, stonewalled for one hour, playing 44 balls for his nine, before being gobbled up by an inswinging delivery from Sanjay Bangar that struck his pads. This brought Assam’s other two ‘professional’ mainstays — Sridharan Sriram and Muzumdar — together and they didn’t disappoint, batting out the rest of the morning session to take the team to lunch at 60 for two off 36 overs. The scoring rate slowed down further after the break when Kartik introduced spin from both ends. Joining him in the attack was veteran Kulamani Parida, who is playing his first match in more than a year after being called for chucking in a match against Tamil Nadu. However, the off-spinner proved virtually toothless and looked to be bowling in a very restricted way.advertisementSriram and Muzumdar showed tremendous patience in stitching together a 54-run stand in nearly 27 overs. But Kartik’s trademark guile, combined with sustained aggressive field-placing, paid dividends when the left-arm spinner got one to turn sharply into Sriram, whose poke resulted in a bat-pad catch to Yere Goud at silly point.Shortly thereafter the umpires had to step in and stop a small argument between the two captains regarding the amount of time Muzumdar was taking to get ready to face deliveries. The match referee Manu Nayyar summoned both of them after the day’s play, though the captains dismissed it as “no big deal’. Kartik brought in Marripuri Suresh from the other end and the leg- spinner exploited the uneven bounce on the pitch to dismiss Muzumdar — the highest run-getter in Ranji history — caught at short cover by TP Singh. Assam at that stage were struggling at 106 for four.Deepak Sharma and Tarjinder Singh saw out the 10 overs till tea, but just two balls into the final session, Kartik ended the former’s stubborn 92-ball 21 with a beautifully flighted delivery that took pad first and was ruled leg-before by umpire Shavir Tarapore.Wicketkeeper Kunal Saikia finally gave the meandering innings some momentum with a couple of lusty blows, including the only six off the innings, as he and Tarjinder put on 43 at a relatively brisk 2.9 runs an over. But Kartik, now bowling from the pavilion end, got Saikia caught by V Cheluvaraj at bat-pad and, in his very next over, Mahesh Rawat effected a swift stumping to push Assam on the back foot. The decision, which was referred to the third umpire, was signalled by holding up a red piece of cloth in the pavilion in the absence of lights. After the day’s play, Kartik told reporters that the attacking field he kept in place all day was preplanned.”On this pitch, you have to play the waiting game, and that’s why I didn’t push the fielders back. Most of the wickets in my career have come through close-in fielders, and that was the plan,” he said.Muzumdar admitted that the going had been tough. “Obviously, it’s a tough wicket to bat on and, also, a tough ground to score on because the outfield is heavy. We would’ve been happy if we had lost two wickets less,” he said.BRIEF SCORES: Assam 174/7 (A Muzumdar 44, T Singh batting 34, M Kartik 4/47) In Kolkata, Mumbai’s Ajinkya Rahane struck a century against Bengal. File Photo   –  PTIcenter_img March 29, 2017 Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat have been primarily chosen for their high affinity towards the sport COMMENT COMMENTS Pro Kabaddi is now set to expand to up to four new geographies. With the addition of new teams, Pro Kabaddi is gearing up to surpass other Indian sports leagues in terms of geographic representation (teams from 11 states), number of matches (130+ matches), and duration of the league (13 weeks) in Season 5.The intended new states for the latest edition have been selected very carefully. Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat have been primarily chosen for their high affinity towards Kabaddi with massive fan bases, significant on-ground presence of the sport, and potential commercial value to sponsors and advertisers. Both Haryana and Tamil Nadu contribute large number of players to Pro Kabaddi, as well as leading public sector teams in the country. Along with Uttar Pradesh, these states have a rich cultural tradition of highly popular local Kabaddi tournaments. The intrinsic popularity of Kabaddi in India has been most recently demonstrated in Gujarat where the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup has led to a huge surge in public following of Kabaddi.Pro Kabaddi became an instant hit with Indian sports fans in its very first season in 2014 as 435 million viewers tuned in. This modern league in India’s ancient sport of Kabaddi has continued to grow from strength to strength in subsequent seasons. Its cumulative viewership growth of 51% over 4 seasons is the highest for any sports league in India.“Even for an optimist like me, the response we have seen for Kabaddi is surprising. Having seen its affinity in the country, it would be a disservice to the sport if we do not grow it further. All stakeholders have decided to come together to expand the league and given the pace at which this is growing, it might be just the first in a series of expansions in the coming years”, said Chairman and CEO, Star India, Uday Shankar.last_img read more

California to Let College Athletes Make Money, Defying NCAA (Video)

first_imgSACRAMENTO, Calif. — Defying the NCAA, California’s governor signed a first-in-the-nation law Monday that will let college athletes hire agents and make money from endorsements — a move that could upend amateur sports in the U.S. and trigger a legal challenge.Under the law, which takes effect in 2023, students at public and private universities in the state will be allowed to sign deals with sneaker companies, soft drink makers or other advertisers and profit from their names and likenesses, just like the pros.Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and others cast the law as an attempt to bring more fairness to big-money college sports and let athletes share in the wealth they create for their schools.“Other college students with a talent, whether it be literature, music, or technological innovation, can monetize their skill and hard work,” he said. “Student athletes, however, are prohibited from being compensated while their respective colleges and universities make millions, often at great risk to athletes’ health, academics and professional careers.”He predicted other states will introduce similar legislation. Two lawmakers in South Carolina have already announced plans to do so.FILE – In this April 19, 2019, file photo, an athlete stands near a NCAA logo during a softball game in Beaumont, Texas. California will let college athletes hire agents and make money from endorsements, defying the NCAA and setting up a likely legal challenge that could reshape U.S. amateur sports. (AP Photo/Aaron M. Sprecher, File)The new law applies to all sports, though the big money to be made is in football and basketball. It bars schools from kicking athletes off the team if they get paid. It does not apply to community colleges and prohibits athletes from accepting endorsement deals that conflict with their schools’ existing contracts. The NCAA, which had asked Newsom to veto the bill, responded by saying it will consider its “next steps” while also moving forward with “efforts to make adjustments to NCAA name, image and likeness rules that are both realistic in modern society and tied to higher education.”The NCAA, which has 1,100 member schools and claims nearly a half-million athletes, said that changes are needed but must be done at a national level through the NCAA, not through a confusing patchwork of state laws.I’m so incredibly proud to share this moment with all of you. @gavinnewsom came to The Shop to do something that will change the lives for countless athletes who deserve it! @uninterrupted hosted the formal signing for SB 206 allowing college athletes to responsibly get paid. pic.twitter.com/NZQGg6PY9d— LeBron James (@KingJames) September 30, 2019Before the governor signed the bill, the NCAA cautioned that the law would give California universities an unfair recruiting advantage, which could prompt the athletic association to bar them from competition.Powerhouses like the University of Southern California, UCLA, Stanford and the University of California, Berkeley, could find themselves banned. But while the NCAA is the top governing body for college sports, membership is voluntary. If the California schools are forced out, they could form a new governing body. The law represents another instance of California jumping out front of other states and positioning itself in the vanguard of change. The movement to allow college athletes to profit from their achievements on the court or the playing field has been cast as a matter of civil rights and economic fairness.Professional athletes have endorsed the law, including NBA superstar LeBron James, whose 14-year-old son is a closely watched basketball prospect in Los Angeles and will be 18 when the measure takes effect. On Instagram, James exulted over the signing of the measure, saying it will “change the lives for countless athletes who deserve it!”He added: “NCAA, you got the next move. We can solve this for everyone!”Democratic state Sen. Nancy Skinner, the bill’s author, said it rights a longtime wrong: “For decades, college sports has generated billions for all involved except the very people most responsible for creating the wealth. That’s wrong.”The new law does not go so far as to allow colleges and universities to pay athletes directly for their play. The NCAA has steadfastly refused to pay players in most cases. But a committee led by Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith and Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman is studying other ways players could make money. Its report is expected in October. The NCAA does let some athletes accept money in some instances. Tennis players can accept up to $10,000 in prize money per year, and Olympians can accept winnings from their competitions. Also, many schools pay players yearly cost-of-living stipends of $2,000 to $4,000.The NCAA reported $1.1 billion in revenue in 2017.By: Adam Beam, Associated PressTweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Prez Trump attacks globalism while putting pressure on Iran

first_imgUnited Nations: Facing growing calls for his impeachment, President Donald Trump addressed the UN General Assembly on Tuesday and delivered a roaring defense of nationalism and American sovereignty even as he tried to rally a multinational response to Iran’s escalating aggression. The president implored the world’s leaders to prioritize their own nations, with strong borders and one-on-one trade deals, rejecting sweeping transnational organizations and alliances. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince Salman ‘snubbed’ Pak PM Imran, recalled his private jet from US: Report”The future does not belong to globalists. The future belongs to patriots. The future belongs to strong, independent nations,” Trump told a murmuring crowd at the General Assembly. “Globalism exerted a religious pull over past leaders causing them to ignore their own national interests. Those days are over.” Focusing on the United States’ self-interest, Trump said that the nation’s security was jeopardized by the threat posed by Iran and warned Tehran to stop its aggression toward Washington’s allies in the Middle East. Also Read – Iraq military admits ‘excessive force’ used in deadly protests”As long as Iran’s menacing behavior continues sanctions will not be lifted. They will be tightened,” Trump warned. “The United States does not seek conflict with any other nation. We desire peace, cooperation, and mutual gain with all. But I will never fail to defend America’s interests.” As speculation mounted that Trump could meet in New York with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, the president raised the possibility of a diplomatic breakthrough, saying “the United States has never believed in permanent enemies. We want partners, not adversaries.” But while Trump commanded the global stage, momentum was building in Washington among Democrats to impeach the president after it was revealed that he ordered his staff to freeze nearly USD 400 million in aid to Ukraine a few days before a phone call in which he pressured the Eastern European nation’s leader to investigate the family of political rival Joe Biden. While Trump wants allies to join the U.S. in further isolating Iran, he also seems to be holding to his go-it-alone strategy of using economic sanctions to pressure Tehran to give up its nuclear program and stop attacks that are rattling the Middle East. In the speech’s first moments, Trump did not explicitly to blame Iran for recent strikes against oil facilities in Saudi Arabia. Iran has denied orchestrating the attack, which Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has deemed “an act of war.”last_img read more

Rate cut to boost housing demand banks must pass on benefit to

first_imgNew Delhi: The Reserve Bank’s decision to cut key policy rate by 25 basis points will boost consumer sentiment as well as housing sales during the ongoing festive season which is a crucial period for the realty sector, industry experts said on Friday. With this cut, repo rate, at which it lends to the system, will now come down to 5.15 per cent. The central bank must now ensure effective transmission of rate cuts, announced on Friday as well as earlier, to home loan borrowers, they said. Also Read – Ashok Leyland stock tanks over 5 pc as co plans to suspend production for up to 15 daysEchoing Shah’s view, National Real Estate Development Council (Naredco) President Niranjan Hiranandani said the move will boost sales in festive spirits. “Consumers are spending less on everything from FMCG to automobiles and, of course, real estate. Naturally, the sector eyes RBI’s monetary policy for cuts in the key lending rates to support various measures taken by the government to boost consumption sentiment,” Anarock Chairman Anuj Puri said. The move would go some way in improving consumer sentiment in the festive season, which is a crucial period for real estate sales, he added. “However, much depends on how efficiently banks transmit the benefits to their homebuying borrowers,” Puri said. Dhruv Agarwala, Group CEO of Housing.com and PropTiger said, “The RBI’s decision to further reduce repo rate gives the real estate sector a reason to cheer at a time when it expects sales to improve in the ongoing festive season.” “A reduction in interest rates means more cost-effective home loans for buyers when key property markets already offer them great ready-to-move-in options to pick from, on affordable rates,” he added. CBRE India Chairman and CEO Anshuman Magazine said, “The timing of the cut is crucial as it is expected to spur real estate demand and consumption in the festive season as it is an important period for investment/consumption across sectors.” While the RBI has done its bit, it is now critical that banks facilitate a faster transmission of these rate cuts to ensure that the measures reap results, he added. JLL India CEO & Country Head Ramesh Nair said the real estate sector is likely to witness accelerated sales owing to favourable policy reforms and the gradual transmission of rate cuts to end-consumers through lowering of mortgage rates. “The consecutive rate cuts have been a succour for real estate sector thereby making it the most opportune time for buying homes,” he added. However, Knight Frank India CMD Shishir Baijal said the rate cut should have been steeper to boost housing sales.last_img read more
